Nokia N-78

Cellular Phone, Nokia 1 Comment »

Nokia N-78Love it or leave it won’t do here, we’re afraid. Love it or hate it is more like it. There’s so much to get excited about with Nokia N78. The excellent display and capable camera, topped with Navi wheel, FM transmitter, GPS and Wi-Fi sure round off a nice deal. And yes, the latest FP 2 is a downright treat. If only… Well, you must know already what we think of the package. Anyway, you’re welcome to read on. Nokia N78 has a whole review up ahead to unleash its potential and a lifetime to beg for a facelift.

Nokia N78 stacks up just below the top of the multimedia phone market. The megapixel count and screen size are probably the only things to stop it from directly competing with the N95. It is still quite close and even offers a few features that the omnipresent Nseries ruler lacks.

A nice - even if somewhat humble - alternative of Nokia N78 is Samsung i550w. Carrying a very similar feature-pack, it trades the FM transmitter and the Navi wheel for a trackball and a larger 2.6″ screen. The best part about the Samsung is that it costs a great deal less than the Nokia N78, retailing at about 260 euro. Now, the FM transmitter and FP 2 are not exactly the first things one would choose to trade, but we can understand those willing to save themselves some money.

Another handset to rival the N78 is Nokia N82. The best cameraphone by Nokia to date is currently available for about 300 euro. The 5 megapixel camera comes with protective cover and Xenon flash, while a built-in accelerometer is also on offer. On the other hand, N82 too lacks the FM transmitter, which might sound as a deal-breaker to some.

Nokia 6500 Classic

Cellular Phone, Nokia No Comments »

Nokia 6500 ClassicThe 6500 Classic is Nokia’s thinnest phone so far, and is a stunningly beautiful phone too, with its polished metal casing. It’s an easy to use phone that does just what most people want from a phone - make calls, take pictures and play music. Supplied with 1 Gbyte of memory and a stereo headset, it’s already equipped to go. The one thing missing from this 3G phone is video calling. We have deducted marks because of poor battery life and the small keypad. Available in Black or Bronze.

Now here’s a tasty-looking phone. Nokia have finally joined the ultra-thin revolution with the 6500 Classic phone. Incredibly it’s a 3G phone! And doesn’t it look nice, with its sleek aluminium casing (”individually polished”, according to the Nokia blurb) and available in Black and Bronze. Let’s pause a moment to enjoy the looks.

OK, having drooled enough, let’s look at the exterior of the phone in more detail. There’s absolutely nothing to complain about here. Whereas Sony Ericsson seem intent on destroying nice phones with unergonomic keypads, Nokia have learned their lesson from making “cool” keypads and have provided the 6500 Classic with a small but functional keypad and navigation key. The combination of an ergonomic design, a plain Series 40 interface (no Smartphone junk here!) make this an easy phone to use. Power it up, and the next thing to enjoy is the large and ultra high-resolution LCD display boasting the latest 16 million colour display technology. It’s a display that you can easily customise with a choice of themes (wallpapers, sounds, screensavers, and backgrounds).

The featurelist of the 6500 Classic Read the rest of this entry »

Nokia 7710

Nokia 7710 The new device, but gets a boost to internal storage (90MB), a new megapixel digital camera, and it loses the side-talking and taco shaped form factor.

Make no mistake, the 7710 is a massive device. It weighs in at 195g (6.87oz) and measures up at 128mm x 69mm x 20mm (5.04″ x 2.72″ x .79″) in size. That is big, for sure, but still what I would consider pocketable - at least when compared to Nokia’s own 9500 Communicator, which is thicker, longer, and heavier. The size is understandable once you see the 7710’s beautiful 65k color TFT display. The display is capable of 65k colors and has a pixel resolution of 640×320. Its touch sensitive surface allows for input via a stylus that is located in a silo at the bottom right front corner of the device. The surface of the display seems reasonably resistant to normal wear and tear.

The main controls of the 7710 are Read the rest of this entry »
