The ASUS N90SV-A2 is an 18.4″ multimedia gaming notebook designed for people who might not need the power of a W90, or have the budget for one. Offering dual hard drives, NVIDIA Geforce GT 130M graphics, optional Blu-ray playing capabilities, and a FullHD 1080P display the N90 is perfect for someone who wants a true multimedia hub for their dorm room or office. With prices starting as low as $1,399 online depending on configuration, is this 18.4″ multimedia right worth it?

Build and Design

ASUS gave the N90SV a clean and sleek look with sharply defined contours and a classy pinstripe glossy black finish. When closed the N90 appears to be quite slim with a sharpened front edge that slowly expands out over the screen and gradually slims down again towards the rear. The exterior is tastefully finished with the glossy black plastic and a thin plate of chrome that connects the two screen hinges. While the ASUS logo is displayed front and center, it doesn’t appear to be too large or obscenely flashy.

Screen and Speakers

The 18.4″ FHD 1920×1080 display is above average in quality, with bright colors and very good contrast levels thanks to the glossy surface. For a small dorm room or office the screen is large enough to properly sit back and watch a movie with a few friends. Paired with the Blu-ray drive the movie experience is great compared to even tiny 15.4″ or 17″ notebooks. Viewing angles are average, with about 15 to 20 degrees of vertical viewing range before colors start to distort. Horizontal viewing angles span further, viewable to about 70 degrees before reflections off the glossy surface overpower the displayed images. Backlight brightness is fine for viewing the screen in a brightly lit room, but limit any outdoor use to a heavily shaded are.

The speakers are located below the display, underneath a thin plastic grill. The oddly small speakers feel misplaced on an 18.4″ multimedia notebook and sound underpowered. Peak volume levels were weak, and the speakers sounded very tinny at higher volume levels. Bass and midrange were lacking, leaving only higher frequencies to fill the room. For enjoying a quick movie or listening to streaming music they will probably be more than adequate, but for the best listening experience use the headphone jack or HDMI out for digital audio through a stereo.

Keyboard and Touchpad

ASUS was easily able to fit a full-size keyboard into the N90SV, with room to spare on each side. The keyboard is comfortable to type on once you get used to the keys, which are shaped different from more common keyboards. The keys are more squared off with sharper and more defined edges, and have less of a “cup” to the key surface. Once you get past the shape of the keys the typing surface feels great, with very good support under strong typing. Some flex was noticed under significant finger pressure, but it was minimal at worst. Individual key action was smooth, with a shallow press needed to activate it. Noise while typing wasn’t significant, with only a mild click when each key was pressed.

The N90 offers a large Synaptics touchpad that is a dream to use. Sensitivity is great and with a soft matte finish it is easy to flick your finger around the touchpad and accurately move in on your target. No lag was noticed during use, with my only complaint regarding the touchpad being the default settings. The sensitivity was set a little high, and it was easy to lurch the pointer across the screen by touching your palm to the side of the touchpad by accident. Some minor tweaking of the settings helped fix this, as well as just getting used to the large layout of the notebook. The touchpad button is a rocket style button, with a single solid bar for triggering the left and right button. Moderate pressure was required to activate the button, having shallow feedback and giving off a muted click when pressed.

Ports and features

Port selection on the N90SV is average compared to other notebooks we have reviewed, but it feels underutilized with the amount of open space around the sides of the notebook. The notebook offers four USB ports, VGA, HDMI, two headphone out, microphone in, and LAN. For expansion the it has an ExpressCard/54 slot and SDHC multi-card reader. One feature lacking that is very disappointing is eSATA, used for high speed external storage. This connection should have not been left out of an 18.4″ multimedia notebook. For HD movie playback, the N90SV-A2 sports a Blu-ray drive, which is nice if the notebook fill the role of multimedia hub in a home theater.

Performance and Benchmark

System performance with the Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M was excellent, showing little lag except under higher resolution gaming tests. The notebook flex through normal tasks such as web browsing, startup and shutdown, and playing HD movies with ease.

Gaming performance is slightly below full-on hardcore gaming notebooks, but still very respectable. In Call of Duty: World at War with high detail settings the notebook handled 1080P resolution at 16 to 20FPS. Lowering the resolution down to 720P, speed increased to25-30FPS. Bioshock varied more at 1080P resolution, going between 20-30FPs depending on the amount of action on the screen. Lowering the resolution to 720P, framerates sped up to 40-45FPS. Left 4 Dead was similar, going to 20-30FPs at 1080P, and 40-50FPS at 720P.

Heat and Noise

Thermal performance of the N90SV is excellent. The notebook barely breaks a sweat even after running benchmarks and games. The large surface area of the notebook helps dissipate heat quickly, and the end result is a very lap-friendly notebook. Cooling fan noise was also minimal, staying off most of the time, and when on it was very quiet.

Battery

Power consumption was oddly high with the SiS chipset, just like the F50SV we reviewed a while ago. During low activity the system idled at a high 26 watts, whereas slightly smaller sized and similarly equipped gaming notebooks might draw closer to 20 watts. Because of this our battery figures were below average. With the system set to “Balanced” mode, screen brightness set to 70%, and wireless active the N90SV stayed on for 2 hours and 9 minutes.

ASUS N90SV-A2 Specifications:

The Dell Inspiron 1520 series consists of two models. The Inspiron 1520 is built around an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and (in the case of higher-end models) the new Centrino Duo platform, while the Inspiron 1521 trades Intel for an AMD Turion 64 X2 processor and chipset. Aside from processor choices, Dell is also offering color choices: if buyers don’t like the traditional white or black case, they can opt for red, blue, green, yellow, brown, or pink. We’ve seen colorful laptops before–most recently in the Sony VAIO CR series–but we’ve never seen a colored laptop with as many configuration options as the Dell Inspiron 1520 series offers. Add to that such media-friendly options as a built-in Webcam or Blu-Ray disc drive, and the Dell Inspiron 1520 series will definitely appeal to home users who want a solid all-around laptop with a high degree of customization.

Though the Inspiron 1520 series’ feature set is largely average for the midsize category, a few key items stand out. For example, the laptop’s 15.4-inch wide-screen display can be configured with a sharp 1,440×900 or even sharper 1,920×1,200 native resolution. Users who want always-on connectivity can opt for integrated WWAN from Sprint, Verizon, or AT&T (though you’ll have to subscribe to the carriers’ data service). And buyers of the Intel-based Inspiron 1520 will have the option to include a Blu-Ray drive in their system–still a rare choice outside the realm of premium desktop replacement laptops. Of course, these finer features will drive the Inspiron 1520 series well above the $749 starting price, but many home users will appreciate the option to customize their laptop to fit their needs and lifestyles.

Dell has also borrowed a few handy design features from its other laptop lines and incorporated them into the Inspiron 1520 series… First, media controls along the front edge, similar to those found on the XPS line of laptops, let you easily control disc playback. From the Latitude line, the Inspiron 1520 has adopted a built-in Wi-Fi Catcher, which lets you detect wireless networks even when the laptop’s lid is closed or the computer is powered off.

As often happens with configurable laptops, the price of the Dell Inspiron 1520 series can vary widely depending on your component and feature choices. But we even like the look of the baseline Inspiron 1520 configuration, which incorporates a Core 2 Duo T5250 processor (based on Intel’s previous-generation architecture), 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive for $849. Buyers looking for an even lower price can opt for the baseline Inspiron 1521, which trades the Intel processor for an AMD Turion 64 X2 and costs just $749. These budget-friendly processors won’t outrun the latest-generation components, but they should prove sufficient for most home users’ needs.

Most importantly, it replaces the single-core processor with a low-voltage Core 2 Duo chip. Its dimensions swell slightly to accommodate a bigger 12-inch screen, but it still weighs in at a hair under 3 pounds. While the Apple MacBook Air, the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 and the Toshiba Portege R500 make headlines for their sleek lines and thinness as well as forward-looking features such as solid-state drives, the LifeBook P8010 shuns such obvious attempts at attention. This unassuming ultraportable makes for a very capable travel companion, particularly for business users. It offers security features in a Trusted Platform Module and a fingerprint reader, while finding a comfortable balance between performance and battery life. If you are eyeing high-end ultraportable but can’t fit it into this year’s budget, the LifeBook P8010 provides an affordable and very functional alternative.

While our review unit costs $2,009, Fujitsu is currently offering a fixed configuration for $1,699 that we think is a better deal. You lose 40GB of hard drive space and 1GB of RAM while moving from Vista Business… to XP Pro, but you save more than $400 in the process. An ultraportable is never going to be a powerhouse, and while we believe adding more memory is almost always money well spent, 1GB is enough to power a small XP machine. At $1,699, it’s one of the more affordable ultraportables, which always carry a price premium in comparison to larger laptops. It’s not easy cramming all the components into such a tight space, and the LifeBook P8010 boasts a useful feature set. While some ultraportables such as the MacBook Air drop the optical drive in an effort to save weight and space, the P8010 finds room for a DVD burner. You get a nice mix of ports, too, plus Bluetooth, a PC Card slot, and an SD card reader. (The otherwise excellent ThinkPad X300 lacks the latter two features.)

One feature notably absent, however, is an integrated WWAN antenna or even the option to add a broadband cellular modem card on Fujitsu’s online configurator. If you need more wireless connectivity than Wi-Fi provides, you’ll need to buy a PC Card from a third-party vendor.

While Fujitsu won’t be making any claims along the lines of “the world’s thinnest laptop” for the LifeBook P8010, it does make for an attractive little machine. It tapers from 1.6 inches at its thickest to 1.4 inches along the front edge, putting it on the thick side of the ultraportable scale. Given its relative bulkiness, it feels lighter than you would expect when you pick it up. The inside is outfitted in business gray with black keys, and the lid features a glossy black coating. While the keyboard is spill resistant and the hard drive offers shocks protection, unfortunately the plastic used for both the lid and the wrist rests feels particularly thin and flexes to an almost worrisome degree. In comparison, the ThinkPad X300 feels much tougher, but that extra sturdiness does add another half-pound to the weight.

Like any 12-inch (or smaller) laptop, the ‘s keyboard feels a bit cramped. But Fujitsu did all it could here; the keyboard extends side to side. After a day of use, I grew accustomed to its dimensions, and my typos were greatly reduced. The touch pad has a nice feel to it and is generously proportioned. Between the two mouse buttons sits a fingerprint reader, which doubles as a scroll wheel. Above the keyboard sit four shortcut keys for calling up Fujitsu support, switching screen modes (normal or power saving), adjusting display settings, and opening Internet Explorer. All four buttons are programmable. To the left are icons for battery level and charging status.

Like the keyboard, the screen is as large as it can be, given the dimensions of the laptop. It extends nearly to the edge of each side; unlike the P7230, there’s no wasted bezel space here. The thick bezel above the screen features a Webcam. Like the P7230, the P8010 features an LED-backlit LCD, which results in a bright image and helps with battery life. The display features the typical 1,280×800 native resolution found on other 12-inch ultraportables. It features a smooth finish, but it uses Fujitsu’s Crystal View technology, which does an admirable job keeping glare and reflections to a minimum. Do note that as Fujitsu has moved from a 10.6-inch screen to one measuring 12.1 inches with its ultraportables, Apple and Lenovo just recently came out with 13-inch models whose weight puts them in the ultraportable class.
